Criminal Justice Symposium:
Law Enforcement Training and Intervention

SCHEDULE & WORKSHOPS

Lieutenant Jeffry Murphy
of the Chicago Police Department
will be keynote presenter at this
years Criminal Justice Symposium

This year NAMI Pennsylvania is again proud to include a Criminal Justice System Symposium as part of our annual conference. The purpose of the symposium is to attract criminal justice system professionals from all disciplines in order to put the focus on people with mental illness who become involved with the criminal justice system. This year’s theme addresses front-end diversion and training, beginning with the law enforcement officer who has first contact with a mental health consumer; post-booking diversion such as specialized courts; and finally, post-intervention for police, corrections and probation and parole officers in the aftermath of a critical incident while in the line of duty.

The symposium's Opening Plenary Speaker will be Lieutenant Jeffry Murphy of the Chicago Police Department. Lt. Murphy is the Mental Health and Disabilities Liaison and Crisis Intervention Team Coordinator for the Chicago Police Department. In addition to being a member of NAMI Chicago, he and his wife are also Family to Family Education Course instructors, and have a family member affected by bipolar disorder.

Speakers from law enforcement agencies, the judicial system, local and state corrections, and probation and parole will relate how their agencies are impacted by mental illness, and how training in this area, and intervention after a critical incident, provide them with the tools to more effectively do their jobs and stay safe and well in the process.

We would like to thank the following co-sponsors for making this symposium possible:

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections
The Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole
