Mental Health Month May 2003

“IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. There are various projects and activities taking place to help celebrate Mental Health wellness and recovery. A billboard has been sponsored on Route 19 to educate the public that “Mental Illness is an illness like any other” and asking for help- a sign of strength. This can be seen approximately 5 miles from Route 19 headed South towards Cochranton.

NAMI PA Crawford County volunteers have collected donations which will help support family and peer support groups, along with the free 12 week educational “Family to Family” course which is offered various times throughout the year.

WMGW will air a radio interview on May 18th at 8:00 AM about the month.

The first annual Mental Health and Wellness fair will be held Thursday, May 22, 2003 from 2 to 7 PM at the downtown mall. This has been a collaborative effort of numerous consumers and agencies.

A Mental Health Celebration of Wellness and Recovery will take place at CHAPS on May 23rd beginning at 1:00pm. The celebration is a time for consumers, families, friends and the community to come together and imagine all the possibilities of wellness. The theme is a beach party with games, music, food and a special guest speaker.

On Friday May 30th at 8pm, a Candlelight Vigil will be held at Diamond Park to focus on hope and courage for all persons with mental illness. Mayor Freidburg will speak on Diversity and the acceptance of others. There will be inspirational songs, poetry readings, and reflections from community members. A consumer will speak on her path to recovery. Candles will be lit to enlighten us on our journeys.
