Montgomery County Emergency Services (MCES) -
Community Lectures
All lectures take place in the 2nd floor MCES Conference room at
50 Beech St., which is located on the grounds of Norristown State
Hospital. Go to www.mces.org for driving directions (bottom of the
home page). All lectures Begin at 8:30 a.m., with 3-hour lectures
ending at 11:45 a.m. and full-day lectures continuing in the afternoon
from 12:45 to 4 p.m. Each 3-hour session costs $30 and full-day

Event: Walk Beside Me - Montgomery County rally to increase
awareness and understanding of mental illness
Date: 3 May, registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
Place: Bldg 33, Norristown State Hospital
Note: Walkers will be shuttled to the Courthouse where the rally
will begin at 10 AM. The Walk is approximately 1.2 miles. No registration
fee. Lunch is provided.
Event: CHADD's Parent to Parent classes - AD/HD training
Dates: Monday nights: 5, 12, and 19 May and 2, 9, 16, and 23 June,
7-9 p.m.

Note: Montgomery County Children and Adults with Attention Deficit
Disorder (CHADD) is the sponsor. Marisa Burton, a CHADD-certified
P2P educator, will teach the classes. Enrollment is limited to 20

Event: NAMI PA, Montgomery County's annual membership meeting

presentation of The Maryella Hitt Advocacy Award to a member, and
a presentation on how recovery from mental illness is not only possible

NAMI's Medical Director, Ken Duckworth, MD and moderated by broadcast

One Step" public health campaign web site. NAMI is the national

Event: 2008 NAMI Convention: Tomorrowland Today: Making
Recovery Real
Dates: 13-16 June

Event: Inaugural Pennsylvania Autism Training Conference
(PATC)--A New Vision for Autism Services: Practical Strategies and
Solutions
Date: 28-30 May 2008
Place: Eden Resort Inn & Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, PA
Note: This conference will focus on addressing real-life situations
faced by those who work directly with individuals with autism, from
the youngest children to adults. The presenters will share strategies
that exemplify best and most current practices developed by nationally
recognized autism experts. Participants should be prepared to consider
challenges for those individuals with autism they currently support.
Each session will offer practical strategies and solutions that
can improve the quality of life for people with ASD and their families.

Event: Alternative 2008 Conference: Creating Community through
Active Citizenship
Date: 29 October - 02 November 2008
Place: Buffalo, NY
Noted: The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and the NAMI's
Support Technical Assistance Resource Center (STAR Center), through
a contract with AAFYA, Inc., are providing financial support to
consumers of mental health services who wish to participate in the
2008 Alternatives Conference. The conference host is the National
Empowerment Center. The purpose of the scholarships is to foster
transformation of mental health care to focus on recovery. To be
eligible for this scholarship, a completed application and letter
of recommendation must be received by U.S. mail, postmarked on or

Depression stories wanted. A national documentary
series is looking for individuals willing to share personal stories
about living with unipolar depression. Persons selected will be
interviewed on camera, helping to distinguish clinical depression
from everyday feelings of sadness, and reflecting on treatment and
recovery. If interested, please send NAMI a few paragraphs (400
word limit) about your personal experience. Include name, age, location,
and contact information. Basic questions to address include:
· What were your key experiences with major depression?
· What role has treatment played?
· What advice would you give others?
NAMI will not share names or contact information with the media
without first contacting you for specific consent. We also cannot
guarantee selection for an interview, but all responses will be

NAMI and HealthCentral.com: First Annual Mental Health
and Creativity Contest. NAMI and HealthCentral.com have
teamed up to present the first annual Mental Health and Creativity
Contest. This competition was created with the goal of giving artists
and writers a virtual space to express their joy, pain, struggles
and triumphs in a creative way, and share their works with one another.
Entrants can contribute blogs, essays, poetry, prose, photography
or digital photos of their artwork. All submissions will be showcased
in the online exhibit, but select entries will be called out at
the 2008 NAMI National Convention, which will be held from June
13-16 in Orlando, FL. Entries can be submitted online.
