This presentation is a practical exploration of the complex challenges faced by persons with psychiatric problems and coexisting drug/alcohol abuse. It also focuses on the enduring struggles experienced by their family members and other caregivers.
The prevalence and contributing factors of these problems will be summarized, followed by a spectrum of ideal treatment and family support responses. Real-life challenges will then be addressed (family member frustrations, resistance and defiance, feelings of hopelessness and failure, guilt, and others), along with strategies that emphasize the unique resources of family: leading by example, reducing isolation, and strengthening supports.
During his forty years as a psychiatrist, Loren Crabtree, M.D., has published more than 15 articles, is the recipient of the national Lilly Reintegration Award, and has presented at numerous NAMI regional, state, and national events. A graduate of Yale and University of Pennsylvania, he has held clinical faculty appointments at Thomas Jefferson University and Penn.
For the past 23 years, Dr. Crabtree has served as Medical Director of Project Transition (“PT”), which he co-founded. PT is a unique, apartment-based treatment and skill development program for adults with severe and persistent psychiatric problems, including coexisting drug/alcohol abuse. The program consists of four therapeutic communities located in Warrington and Chestnut Hill. For more information: www.projecttransition.com .
