Event: Speaker Meeting with Edie Mannion, M.F.T.
Date: Monday, 12 September, 7:00 p.m.

Note: Edie Mannion, M.F.T., co-founder of the Training
and Education Center (TEC) of the Mental
Health Association of Southeastern PA will present “PROBLEM
SOLVING AS A WELLNESS TOOL”. Problem solving promotes wellness
for individuals with mental illness, while simultaneously being
a cornerstone of family psycho-education. People who cope effectively
with problems tend to work on one problem at a time, learn from
mistakes, abandon what does not work, and stay open to suggestions
from others. This interactive evening will use a few participants’
current concerns or problems to demonstrate the use of this problem

Event: Family-to-Family Education Program
Dates: Wednesdays, beginning mid-September, 7:30
– 9:30 p.m.
Place: Lankenau Hospital, Wynnewood
Note: This is a free 12 week course for family
caregivers of individuals with serious and persistent mental illness.
Trained family members teach the course. All instruction and course
materials are free for class participants. The Family-to-Family
curriculum focuses on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression),
clinical depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder
(OCD). The course discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses
and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to

Event: NAMI PA, Main Line Panel Discussion -- Experiences
with Mental Illness and Recovery
Date: Monday, 14 November, 7:00 p.m.
Place: St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Lancaster
Ave. (Rte 30) and Louella Ave. in Wayne
Note: Several consumers and family members will
discuss their experiences with severe mental illness and recovery.
Panel members will discuss how they have overcome difficulties and
the variety of resources and experiences that have contributed to
recovery. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Note: This one-day educational employment career
conference is designed to help Social
Security beneficiaries with disabilities, who want to work, achieve
their employment goals. The free one-day expo will include benefits
assessment and counseling, educational sessions on career counseling,
interview skills and resume building and how to navigate the Ticket
to Work program. Eligible beneficiaries can obtain support services
in their local community that will enable them to design an employment
plan and to find a job best suited for their skills, experience
and goals.

Event: Second Annual NAMIWalks
for the Mind of America
Date: 24 September, check-in at 8:30 a.m.; start
time 10 a.m.
Place: State Capitol Complex, Harrisburg
Note: This is a NAMI fundraising and awareness-raising
event. Participating walkers are encouraged to raise money by asking
for donations from friends, co-workers, and family members in support
of their participation. Through this outreach, people learn about
NAMI and the important mission it serves. Sponsored by NAMI PA,
this walk is three kilometers long. If you have questions about
the event contact Andrea Jerome at ajerome@NAMI.org.

Event: Support and education for family members
who have lost someone to suicide
Date: beginning 12 September, continuing for six
consecutive Mondays through the 17 October
Place: Peter’s Place, 150 Radnor Chester

Note: This pilot program, sponsored by Peter’s
Place and the Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council, is a closed
educational support group for survivors of suicide. Different topics
will be covered each week: grief, depression, suicide, traumatic
grief, self care and surviving and living after suicide. For more

Montgomery County Emergency Services Community Lecture Series

NAMI RESPONDS IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE KATRINA
NAMI has collaborated to provide support to people affected by this
terrible tragedy. A resource guide is available at www.nami.org/hurricanekatrina
. NAMI has also established a RELIEF FUND and is accepting donations.
This fund will directly support NAMI state organizations and affiliates
directly affected by the disaster and engaged in providing direct
support to consumers and their families. You may contribute to the
fund in one of three ways:
1. Go to www.nami.org/donate.
In the NOTES section of the donation, please specify the donation
is for this named fund.
2. Mail a check written to NAMI, designated for the fund, and mail
to NAMI, Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, 2107 Wilson Blvd., Suite

Advocacy News
Federal Spending on Medicaid. On September 6, Congress returns
from its month-long summer recess and will begin work on a massive
budget measure that includes a requirement to limit future Medicaid
spending by $10 billion over the next 5 years.
Section 8 Housing. Last month we reported that the Senate cleared
legislation (HR 3058) that includes full restoration of funding
for the HUD Section 8 program and will actually increase funds for
new capital advance and project-based assistance grants in FY 2006.
The full Senate is expected to take up HR 3058 in September.
ACTION NEEDED:
Senator Specter sits on the Committees that will review these proposals;
please call his local office at 215.597.7200 or fax 215.597.0406)
urging him to:
oppose increases in co-payments for non-preferred prescription
drugs covered under Medicaid,
oppose efforts to restrict access to medications to treat mental
illness through prior authorization, step therapy and mandatory
therapeutic substitution requirements implemented as part of state
supplemental rebate programs.
