Needs
Assessments for Older Caregivers
Our August Glenside support group
(Thursday, August 9th) will host Avile Saperstein,
a consultant for Elwyn Institute.
Avile is in the process of assessing the needs of older
caregivers, and one of her focuses is on caregivers of persons
with mental illness. If you or someone you know are interested in
participating, please feel free to attend our support group at
7:30 PM. We will also have facilitators available for
those who are in need of support in their situation with a loved
one with mental illness. Please
call our office (215-886-0350) if you plan to attend (and please
let us know if you are coming for the needs assessment or for
support).
Fourth
Annual NAMIWalks For The Mind of America
Please plan to join us on Saturday,
September 15th as we once again board our bus and take
off for Harrisburg
to participate in the fourth annual Pennsylvania NAMIWalks for
the Mind of America. This
state-wide annual Walk both raises much needed funds for us
to continue our educational programs (which we provide at no cost)
as well as awareness in battling the stigma and misconceptions
associated with mental illness.
Teams are now forming and we invite you and your family
or place of employment to become a team—or simply join our MontCo
NAMI team (last year we were the “Montco All-stars”) and participate
in this very exciting event. Free T-shirts to the first 100 people
to raise $25. or more.
Enclosed is a donor form to sign up sponsors for you and
your team—or if you cannot join us on the 15th, simply
send a contribution and sponsor a walker ( Checks
may be made payable to NAMI-Montgomery County. All contributions are tax deductible).
You can also pledge on-line at http://namipa.nami.org. For information on location and times for bus
pick-ups on September 15th please call our
office or see our September MontCo Memo.
Annual
NAMI Family Picnic
This is a big weekend for us as on
Sunday, September 16th from 12:30-3:00 we will hold our annual NAMI Family picnic at
the Norristown
Farm Park. Food, games and surprises (and a lot of fun!)
are guaranteed so plan on joining us.
If you have a loved one in a residential program, please
invite them and their housemates.
If you plan on attending, please bring something to share
for 8-10 people (not mandatory, however!). We will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs and
beverages. Also, please
call our office (215-886-0350) so we may know how many will be
attending.
Family
to Family in Norristown
There are still some slots available for our
NAMI signature Family to Family educational program, starting Tuesday September 4th
at the Human Services Center in Norristown (6:45 to 9 PM). If you, or anyone you know is interested in
attending (or learning more about the
program) please call our office at 215-886-0350.
NAMI Comes to Norristown
We will soon be opening our third
NAMI office in Norristown. This
will be at Catholic Social Services on Johnson
Highway.
We are looking forward to bringing
our NAMI services to that community, and especially to the Latino
population of Norristown.
We have
some very exciting events planned for the fall, including:
- An
all day workshop with The Beck Institute on Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy with Anxiety and Co-Occurring Disorders (CE’s will be
available for psychologists and social workers)
- A
half day educational program on children’s mental health, co-sponsored
with
- RCCAP (Regional Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
- A fund raising event involving multiple vendors (Longaberger’s
Baskets, Silpada Jewelry, Pampered Chef, Kathy’s Stitches to
name a few)
- A preview of the award winning film, Canvas
( the story of a mother who lives with schizophrenia; her ten
year old son and her husband) starring Academy Award winner
Marcia Gay Harden and Emmy Award winner
Joe Pantoliano
And much more. We are also in the process of enhancing our
website and will soon have it up and operational. Be sure to check us out at www.montconami.com.
Enjoy
the rest of your summer and The MontCo Memo will be back in the
fall!
