PA, Main Line Board Member
Steven Siegel, MD, Ph.D. Receives 2008 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award

Dr. Steve Siegel, NAMI PA Main Line
MERION,
PA – NAMI PA, Main Line is pleased to announce that Board
member (and Berwyn resident), Dr. Steven Siegel has been awarded
an 18th Annual Exemplary Psychiatrist Award by the National Alliance
on Mental Illness (NAMI). Dr. Siegel was nominated for the award
by NAMI PA, Main Line, the local affiliate of NAMI, on whose board
he serves.
“I
am honored to receive this award from NAMI. This is a very special
award because it comes from the people I am most concerned about,
namely the patients and families that are so affected by schizophrenia
and other devastating psychiatric illnesses,” stated Dr. Siegel.
Exemplary
Psychiatrist Awards are highly competitive and are given to psychiatrists
who have demonstrated excellence and dedication in a number of areas
of psychiatric practice. They are awarded to those psychiatrists
who have “gone the extra mile” to help those with mental
illness. A recipient must provide excellent clinical care and comprehensive
treatment to individuals with severe mental illness of all ages
and socio-economic status and they must work in the community to
educate individuals and family members about mental illness as well
as the public in an effort to reduce stigma associated with mental
illness.
Dr.
Siegel received a certificate and award from NAMI along with an
invitation to a special breakfast honoring awards recipients during
the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting in Washington,
D.C. in May 2008.
In our
community, Dr. Siegel volunteers his time and expertise to NAMI
PA, Main Line. He serves as a board member for the Main Line affiliate
where he works with other members to address issues of appropriate
mental health care, housing and mental health parity. His input
has helped the organization focus and improve its services and outreach
in our community. He is available to NAMI PA, Main Line’s
Family-to-Family class members and participates at gatherings of
families looking for ways of coping with a loved one’s mental
illness. Dr. Siegel is present at many other NAMI-sponsored functions
where he takes the opportunity to talk with both families and consumers
about mental illness. In this capacity he has helped raise money
for the affiliate and the work that it does, which includes educating,
supporting and advocating for individuals and families in our community
who are coping with a mental illness.
At his
clinic at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Siegel treats adolescents
and adults. His practice includes a focus on the care of adolescents
with new onset psychosis or behavioral problems that may progress
to schizophrenia. Dr. Siegel’s treatment of these patients
does not stop with a simple psychological evaluation. Dr. Siegel
provides comprehensive treatment that includes psychotherapy, medication
management, and social supports such as family counseling. Dr. Siegel
also addresses the medical issues of weight management and neurologic
co-morbidities as most of the patients he treats lack sufficient
access or ability to access medical care. Therefore, they often
receive primary care and medical treatment through psychiatric visits.
Please
join us in congratulating our friend and neighbor, Dr. Steven Siegel,
on this outstanding achievement.
