During week 24 (June 14-20, 2009), influenza activity decreased in the United States, however, there were still higher levels of influenza-like illness than is normal for this time of year.

HHS Announces Advanced Development Contract for New Way to Make Flu Vaccine
- HHS News - June 23
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that the department will pursue advanced development of new way to make influenza vaccine. The work will be done by Protein Sciences Corporation, Inc., of Meriden, Conn.

The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal provides recognition of new and re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence, prevention, and elimination. Who Cares about Mosquito Bites? We Do

It can be scary to think about it (so often we don't), but a single mosquito bite can give you West Nile virus. And sure, many of the people who get bitten by an infected mosquito won't get sick. They are lucky.

New Immunization Guidance

Updated Recommendations for Use of Haemophilus influenzae Type b (Hib) Vaccine: Reinstatement of the Booster Dose at Ages 12-15 Months - CDC/MMWR - June 26
Effective immediately, CDC, in consultation with ACIP, AAFP, and AAP, is recommending reinstatement of the booster dose of Hib vaccine for children aged 12--15 months who have completed the primary 3-dose series.

ACIP votes to recommend reduced rabies vaccination series
- CDC - June 24
At the June 24, 2009 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting, the rabies working group presented evidence in support of a recommendation to reduce the number of vaccine doses in the human rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) series from 5 to 4 doses. After much discussion, ACIP voted in favor of accepting the recommendation.

Food Recall

Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Linked to Eating Raw Refrigerated, Prepackaged Cookie Dough - CDC - June 25
As of Thursday, June 25, 2009, 69 persons infected with a strain of E. coli O157:H7 with a particular DNA fingerprint have been reported from 29 states.

Colorado Firm Recalls Beef Products Due To Possible E. coli O157:H7 Contamination
- USDA - June 28
JBS Swift Beef Company, a Greeley, Colo., establishment is voluntarily expanding its June 24 recall to include approximately 380,000 pounds of assorted beef primal products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Picnic and barbecue season offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun with family and friends. But these warm weather events also present opportunities for foodborne bacteria to thrive. As food heats up in summer temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly.

U.S. Marshals Seize Drug Products Manufactured by Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd. FDA acts to prevent repeated drug quality problems
- FDA - June 25
U.S. Marshals, at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, today seized drug products manufactured by Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd. (Caraco), at the company’s Michigan facilities in Detroit, Farmington Hills, and Wixom. The seizure also includes ingredients held at these same facilities.
