Harrisburg State Hospital Closing

We are providing information on the two state hospitals to which consumers could be transferred...

DANVILLE STATE HOSPITAL
200 State Hospital Drive
Danville, PA 17821-9198
888-796-3476

Mission Statement
We are committed to provide individualized treatment, rehabilitation and discharge planning services for consumers with serious and persistent mental illness.

Vision Statement
Danville State Hospital will expand its role as an integral part of the mental health continuum by providing optimal treatment and services in partnership with the community.

Values
Danville State Hospital places a high value upon:
• The quality of life and inherent worth of the individual.
• The capacity to be independent.
• Confidentiality, dignity and personal integrity for consumers.
• Creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.
• Designing programs for consumers, not putting consumers into programs.
• The capacity to grow, thrive and achieve the highest possible level of functioning.
• Balancing what is in the best interest of consumers, family members, significant others, staff and the community.
• The participation of consumers, family members, significant others and the community in treatment as much as possible.
• Mutual and sharing relationships with others.
• Seeing the uniqueness and strengths of individuals behind the diagnosis.

• Treating consumers as people. Being mentally ill does not preclude being human.
• Listening to the needs behind the numbers.
We believe that quality care is paramount and staff is our most important resource.

All active treatment at Danville State Hospital is directed by psychiatric leadership through the treatment team, which is comprised of Psychiatry, General Medicine, Nursing, Social Service, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Vocational Adjustment Services, Chaplain Services and Therapeutic Dietary Services. At Danville, individualized programs are tailored toward assisting the individual in returning to the community. A full array of treatment activities is enhanced by other extracurricular activities: such as, dinner theaters, recreational activities, and many seasonal events.

Message from the CEO

Danville State Hospital welcomes you...

Danville State Hospital, a long-term psychiatric facility, is located one mile northeast of Danville, Pennsylvania, and was incorporated on April 13,1869. Thus, it is the second oldest state psychiatric facility in Pennsylvania.

The hospital's service area currently encompasses the following counties: Columbia, Centre, Clinton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Snyder and Union. Beginning in the spring of 2005, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton and Perry Counties will be added to our referral and placement area.

We are a facility that has had a very successful Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations survey in March 2003 and received a combined score of 98. This approval represents the sixth straight time that Danville has received a three-year accreditation from the Joint Commission, which attests to the high quality of care given to all individuals entrusted to our care.

Over the past five years, much emphasis has been placed by this hospital on collaborating with county Mental Health Administrations to return individuals to the community. We work with them on Community/Hospital Integration Project Programs (CHIPPs) and assist them to divert admissions for people who can be served in a less restrictive setting. In addition, our hospital staff provides vocational rehabilitation treatment to discharged consumers, consultation on special needs populations, a cognitive remediation programming, and a myriad of training programs for community staff and providers.
As a result, we have been able to consolidate our patient living areas from four buildings to one. The living areas for consumers are primarily single rooms, with only a few double or multi-bed rooms in each unit.

With the consolidation effort, Danville State Hospital facilities are gradually evolving into a human resource center. Over 25% of the unused buildings are now being leased by other human resource organizations with plans to have additional buildings leased in the very near future.

In 1999, the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, under Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare, began an initiative to reduce the utilization of seclusion and restraint at the State Mental Hospitals. In adopting this initiative, Danville State Hospital has experienced success while continuing to provide a safe, effective, and collaborative treatment environment. On November 30, 2004, Danville State Hospital became the first psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania and the nation to go four years without the use of mechanical restraint. This achievement represents a significant milestone in the history of the hospital and the evolution of mental health treatment.

We look forward to expanding our service to a broader spectrum of Central Pennsylvania, and to be part of the service continuum for individuals who have severe mental illness and substance abuse issues and to their families.

Donna Ashbridge
Chief Executive Officer

Admission Process
Individuals admitted to Danville State Hospital must come directly from an inpatient hospitalization at a community hospital and must be approved by the County MH/MR Administration. Admission referrals from the general public are not accepted. If the treating physician at the community hospital determines that the patient requires longer term psychiatric treatment, a referral is initiated by the social worker at that facility.

Referrals are accepted from the following counties: Columbia/Montour/Snyder/Union, Huntingdon/Mifflin/Juniata, Lycoming/-Clinton, Northumberland, Centre, and Schuylkill.
We anticipate additional counties will begin referrals later this year: Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton and Perry.

Authorization for admission to Danville State Hospital requires:
1. The approval of the appropriate County Mental Health designee from the county where the individual/consumer resides, and
2. An involuntary commitment by court order under Section 304 or 305 of the Mental Health Procedures Act of 1976.
3. Voluntary commitments are acceptable, however, must come through the County Mental Health Program and have their approval.

Hours of Operation and Contact Information
Social Work staff is available weekdays at 570-271-4563 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM to answer questions about admission procedures.
Clinical referral materials should be mailed by an approved referral source (an acute care community psychiatric hospital) simultaneously to the appropriate County Mental Health designee from the patient's home county and to the address above.

Visiting Guidelines
Visiting hours are weekdays from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and weekends and holidays from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Visitation by clergy, attorneys, and others due to special circumstances can be made other times through prior arrangements.

Consumer Rights
Consumers are provided with a copy and explanation of our Rights Statement upon admission. A full-time Consumer Rights Representative is available to all consumers and their families.

Facility Census Information
As of January 17, 2005 Danville State Hospital had 132 patients
