Harrisburg State Hospital Closing

We are providing information on the two state hospitals to which consumers could be transferred...

WERNERSVILLE STATE HOSPITAL
Route 422 & Sportsman Road
P.O. Box 300
Wernersville, PA 19565
610-678-3411

Wernersville State Hospital is located approximately twelve miles west of the city of Reading in Berks County. Wernersville is a “Recovery” based facility that utilizes a treatment mall format to provide recovery services for individuals suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. Our treatment mall was recognized as the outstanding psychosocial rehabilitation program in Pennsylvania for the year 2002 by the Pennsylvania Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services.
The term “recovery” refers to the process of developing the knowledge and coping skills that enable and empower one to live with and to manage one’s mental illness. For consumers with more severe and chronic conditions, recovery is an ongoing and lifelong process of managing the symptoms of the illness and making changes in self, relationships and lifestyle.
Wernersville currently has 182 beds and serves Berks, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties. The hospital will gain approximately 60 additional beds and begin to serve York and Adams counties in the next few months.

The CEO, Irene L. Taylor, has worked as a Commonwealth employee since 1970 in various capacities at several state hospitals and mental retardation centers. In 2001 she transferred to Wernersville State Hospital as Chief Social and Rehabilitative Executive, and in 2003 she became Wernersville’s CEO. As CEO, she is responsible for the 24 hour treatment of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness who have been court committed to the hospital. Irene is available to meet with families and answer any questions they may have. She can be reached at 610-670-4111 or 800-828-3354
