Dear Senator _________________ :

I am writing as a member of the _______________________________________ Affiliate, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), Pennsylvania Chapter. Our organization is dedicated to helping mental health consumers and their families rebuild their lives and conquer the challenges posed by severe and persistent mental illness. Our purpose is to help all people who are affected by mental illnesses.

I am very concerned with the recently-passed state budget that included a total of $103 million in cuts to mental health and drug and alcohol services. These programs provide vital services that help those who need mental health or drug and alcohol services remain productive members of the community. The elimination of these programs will have a disastrous impact on the lives of some of our most vulnerable citizens.

The cost of not providing these services has the potential to dramatically outweigh the cost of providing the services. By not appropriately treating mental illness, individuals may lose their jobs, become homeless or wind up in our prison system.

Please consider restoring these important services for Pennsylvanians and investing in programs that will have a positive fiscal impact in the long run.

Sincerely,
